Segment Reports

Cecilia Lam Newbie

I am trying to find WebTrend report(s) that can report data in segments. I found a segment parameters in the Data Collection User Guide but I am not sure how to set it up at the Tag Builder. Also, I looked through the reports available in WebTrends Insight and WebTrends REST URL Generator. I can not find the report related to segments. Is there any documentation available?

Can WebTrends Data Extraction perform something like Google Advanced Segments?

Thanks and regards,

Cecilia

Can you be more specific about what you are trying to segment?  Webtrends allows for on the fly segment creation and you don't need to use predefined "segment" parameters... you can pass any parameter you want and it only takes a couple button clicks to add it as a custom dimension of data.

The way Google Analytics works is you fill in one of their empty slot "segment" parameters and this becomes essentially "segment 1".  That is unnecessary in Webtrends.

So it would be helpful if you could give me a scenario and I'll walk you through it.

BTW, we also have a specific product feature called "Webtrends Segments" which allows marketers to browse all their visitors, create a segment and with a single button click get a list of email addresses for those folks for marketing efforts.  The word "Segments" could confuse in documentation.  Here is info on the Webtrends Segments feature of our Visitor Data Mart.

      Hi Paul,

Google Analytics Advanced Segments are like the sub-set of the reports. They are configured dynamically too. I didn't have to defined the segments at data collection. For example, its Languages report has data on segments "All Visits", "New Visitors", "Returning Visitors" etc. over a period of time. I watched the WebTrends Segments video on your reply link and found them very similar.

I would like to try out the WebTrends Segments. However, I cannot find the segment tab in my onDemand sandbox. Is this feature avaialble in the Sandbox? Do I have to setup in the profile? Also, how do I retrieve reports with segment(s) via REST URL? Could you please send me more information?

      Thanks and regards,

      Cecilia

It's not enabled in your sandbox account.  Can you contact the person that set up your sandbox/partner account?

Regarding Google Analytics.  I'm almost 100% certain that it is against their policy to export visitor IDs/email addresses (GA is aggregate data only) so I suspect what you are calling a segment is a count/number of how many visits/visitors fall within a filtered set of data.

Yes, Paul. Thank you for your reply.

The GA segment reports contains count and number. The WebTrends Visitor Data Mart has a lot more than what GA has. So, if I don't need the specific user information (such as email), I should only add an extra filter to the REST URL to retrieve my report. Am I correct?

Then, I have another question. For example, can I get a language report that is grouped by "New Visitors" over the last 30 days with metrcs "Number of visits", "% of Visits" and "Page View"? How should the REST URL look like?

Also, if we feed some custom information to the data collection, can we retrieve these data back in reports? and how?

          Thanks for your help.

The Segments features you are looking at is designed to build and save actual segments of visitors.  When you create an output of of those segments, you get all of the data for each and every visitor (for marketing efforts) not a number.  Since what you are looking at is generating statistics I think you need to look into our ad hoc custom reporting capabilities.

Click on Administration, Report Configuration, Custom Reports, Reports and you'll see that you can create any combination of dimensions to build precisely the data you want.

Specifically, there are several ways to get the data you described below.  You could have a language report that has a filter on New Visitors, available for all time periods and has any number of measures you want in it.  Or you could have a language report that has a first dimension of New & Returning visitors and a second dimension of language with all the measures you want which allows you to compare both segments side by side.  You can add filters for duration on site or any number of other criteria.

To be honest though, we're stepping outside of the things I can offer to help on the dev network.  If you would like someone to guide you through setting this up, do you mind calling support and talking to someone in person?
