Are the WCF Service definitions available as a downloable DLL?

Hi there!

We would like to take adavntage of the new REST client capability recently introduced in the WCF REST toolkit. For that we need the WCF service definitions in a DLL. Would it be possible to get the stand alone service definitions as a DLL?? And if not is there another way to do this so we do not have to use the PURE WebClient class??

How should I construct the request to get URLs from pages report?

I can't figure out a way to return Page URLs from pages report. Looks like by default it ruturn the page titles.

I have to pull monthly data from 20+ profiles into a dashboard and would rather not have a separate worksheet for each profile and month....

Hi,

I just had a discussion with a developer who currently works on a flash application which uses the API to pull data in.

It works fine in the developer verions, but does not get any data in a normal player. Due to the developer this is caused by the missing crossdomain.xml on the ws.webtrends.com server. Does anyone have the same experience and ideally a solution?

@Webtrends: Can you please verify that and place a crossdomain.xml on your server?

Building/Testing Against REST Web Services

When building & testing web services (DX REST) I have generally just hit the web services and pulled down the report, profile list, report list, or whatever other data I needed. However there is a problem with doing this, continuously pulling the report data down uses up usage unnecessarily & is also somewhat slow for debugging & troubleshooting.

What I'd like to be able to do is to either save, cache, or otherwise maintain a local repository of DimensionalReport Objects that I've previously retrieved form the web services. I have tried to serialize the returned objects but errors occur.

Does anyone have any other ideas, insight, or thoughts on how to setup an environment that wouldn't require continuously hitting the web services?

Drilldowns

I tried to pull one data from one of our Drilldowns. It is a custom report version of the Geography Drilldown, but has Visitor measures in it. It looks like no matter what measures I ask for, I always get visits, % visits and Page Views, but never any of the visitor measures (Daily, weekly, monthly, etc.).

Support for legacy reports

In the documentation there are 33 legacy reports that are not supported in REST. While you suggest creating a custom report with the same data to get the covered, that not only uses up a customer's alloted custom reports with unnecessary duplication, but also you do not get any history before the report was generated. Are there plans to support these reports? If not, we will probably have to use SOAP to maintain data continuity.

Feature suggestion: variations on XML format

I think it would be really good to be able to have a choice of different XML variants coming back from the REST API.

I would like to see something along the lines of a <itemName datatype="datatype"> type syntax instead of <datatype name="Item Name">. This is easier to read for one thing, and may be easier to process in some languages (particularly loosely-typed ones where we may not even need to look at the data type). Of course, the dimension/measure name would have to be made XML element friendly (similar to how they are for ODBC now), so it might be necessary to retain the original display name as an attribute too. Actually, thinking about it, the datatype and display name information could probably be removed from the data section altogether and placed into the report definition section, since we should only need it once...

Anyway, maybe this is just personal preference, but I'm just thinking...

User Role permissions and available profiles

We use permission based roles to grant users access to only certain profiles within our account.

Logging in with the credentials of a "restricted" user allows me to access the full set of profiles and not just those designated by the role.

Will role based permissions be applied to the Generator UI ?

Custom Reports and 'Trend' Radio Button Option in the Generator UI

I searched this site for info about the 'trend' option in the 'Generator' UI, but couldn't find

discussions that spoke to the situation I'm dealing with.

Working with a customer 'LaQuinta' who has Custom Reports (single and double dimensions) with

the 'interval data' option checked for the measures. However, when I select those reports in the

Generator UI, the 'Trend' option is greyed out. Is this by design? Shouldn't be! I selected the

'Key Metrics Summary' report (that is the OOTB report with time period trending), and got

same behavior. I can get the interval data with an ODBC connection, so I know it's available.

LaQuinta needs to pull the time interval/period data into a spreadsheet for the execs. What am I missing?

Am I misunderstanding the meaning of 'trend' in the UI? Help!

I have a good one for you guys. Could you include a version variable. Add something like Ver=12 to the REST request string (if it is not present, the default could be most recent version). That way if you make a big change (like you did last night) you don't blow out the stuff that folks have built, and folks can revert to an older version while changes are made.

Utilities for keeping configurations organized

We have a lot of custom reports & custom components, and a lot of profiles also. We need to keep them organized and perhaps most importantly need to be able to go through them looking for inconsistencies or problems or to doublecheck that we set them up right. As you know the configuration information is scattered through a lot of .ini files.

Do you developers (or perhaps you Professional Services people) have tools that help with this? The Summary screens for profiles or custom reports are helpful, but they have to be visited and copied individually. And they have to be converted into a spreadsheet or maybe a database to be more useful than the simple text format.

We use the WT software, so we've written a script that collects settings from several ini files and produces a basic dump (spreadsheet) for all our custom reports - names, GUIDs, dimensions, measures, filters, and a few other things. Even though the output is fairly primitive, it's a big time-saver especially when we leverage Excel for sorting etc.

We'll be doing the same thing for profiles, custom filters, and so on. Eventually we'd also like to do something that will write the values back to the ini's if we change them, for example if we do a universal change to the name of a parameter.

But we're hoping you have or are working on something even better than our little script approach.

One example use: If a parameter name changes, what are all the filters and dimensions and measures that use that parameter? (We have to check every one for possible effects.)

Another use: We just created 80 filters that get applied to 100 different custom reports. Did we turn them on for all the right reports? Are all the filters set to use regex, or did we miss some?

P.S. I realize that this Developers Network is really intended as a Developers-using-Open-Exchange Network, but somehow I perceive this challenge as fitting in. Or, at least, I want it to be discussed a little and have no place else to go!

Auto refresh DX data in Excel step by step

One of the great things about the Webtrends REST web services is that there is NO PLUGIN required. No code, no add-ins, the connections are live.

All you need is a login to Webtrends and the workbook will work for you.

One of the really important use cases for this is when you are creating dashboards... but you don't want to have to manually updated a dashboard every month (week? day?) you just want to send your reports to other users and let them see the current data regardless. With some web services for other products out there, if you email reports around and want live data for all your recipients, you need to install an Excel plugin on every recipients machine which may work for you... but we've found that is not feasible for many (most?) of you. This was an important consideration in our web services design. There is a place for plugins (like designing initial dashboards for example) but the output needs to be easy to share, email, etc.

The funny thing is that we made it so easy to email reports to other users that we've had the request from several people on how you can make it so that the data will auto-refresh when the workbook is opened so that a REST request for "current_month" is always the current month.

Enabling auto-refresh on the REST data is really easy in Excel:

Step 1: Open a workbook that has Webtrends REST data in it. Click anywhere in the Webtrends data.

Step 2: Click on the "Data" > Connection "Properties" option.

Step 3: This dialogue comes up (screen shot). Note that this data is only available with authentication so you can't just have it refresh the data in the background without a login. So I recommend using the "Refresh data when opening the file" option.

That's it. Now anytime you open your Webtrends workbooks, it will automatically ask for your login to access the REST data and it will refresh.

Proposed change: HTML format - Feedback requested

We've created an enhanced HTML format intended to resolve some issues we've had several of you request. However, I'd like to send this out for general feedback.

Currently the HTML format creates a table but the data isn't fully flattened, it is formatted for appearance. I.e. for any table of data with multiple columns, each row of data doesn't contain the values of the parent that it is under, it just leaves nulls. It is good for readability.

However it causes significant issues in Excel and in applications because if you were to filter or select data based on a value in a parent column, none of the children get selected. Pivot tables are not possible on this data as an example.

What we are proposing is to create change the current formatted HTML tables from this:

Example (what our data looks like now). Problem: If you were to filter or pivot on 5/4/2009 all the rows of data would disappear so you can't actually select the data from that date in this view.

Into this:

Example (what a fully flattened table would look like). Benefit: You can filter or create pivot tables to pivot on any column of this data:

Are there any use cases for keeping the html format the way it is now? Right now we only have votes for changing it. Are we missing something?

If not, we'll make this enhancement.

If there are good use cases for the old format, we'd like to propose that the new default for format=html be the new one and there is a possibility to make the old format something different (format=html2?). Obviously we'd rather not keep around a format though that has little value in it so please give examples to help us out.

missing reports and how to get daily reports for a specific time period

Question 1. generator does not have options for me to select some reports, such as Scenario Analysis and Onsite Advertising. How can I get these reports?

Question 2. I tried period = time span * trend ength (as described in theAPI) but I always get an error message. How can I get daily reports for a specific time period? Why am I getting an error?

Problem with Documentation on "Range" Parameter

In the REST documentation the parameter "range" is defined as one that can have either one or two parameters. If there is only one parameter as in:

range=100,

it states this will return the first 100 rows.

If there are two parameters as in:

range=101*200,

it states this will return rows 101 through 200.

Either the documentation is wrong or the REST Generator is not working correctly. You can not configure a REST URL with only one value in the range parameter. I am not sure that the second definition is accurate either.

Access Issues on initial requests?

Since I have just started working with this API, it seems I have some issues that may have been dealt with before: Basically after setting up a user in a client account with report manager access I get a 401 error when trying to simply list the profiles in the account. Perhaps there is an account setting that needs to be enabled for the account to work with the beta?

REST API - Filtering dimension data

I have recently found out that there may be a critical limitation in filtering dimension data when using the REST API.

Accouring to the documentation(and the generator) we can use the parameter search=<dimension value>. I have been told that search=<dimension value> * =<dimension value> * =<dimension value> may work or is supposed to work. Me and a few other have tried this with no success. Maybe this has worked in the past? Being able to filter on dimension data is an important feature that I hope webtrends REST API will support.

I have a customer example for this. (They are currently beta testing the REST API)

This customer uses webtrends data as a sales tool.
Their site is a portal for educations and they use for example this report to see what organizations has visited the pages for the different educations.
The school then has to pay for the amount of traffic this portal has generated… They internal sales people are doing extract for specific educations when talking to these customers on the phone. This report is massive and they need to limit the extract to the few ID's they are interested for that specific sales call.

Single Level Paths Forward (and Reverse, while we're at it)

So I totally understand why we are not yet able to get Path Analysis and scenarios, but can we or are there plans to include the Single-Level Paths Forward/Reverse in the new UI and the REST API? Big fan of this report and it seems like a bummer to have to use the ODBC to get the data. I can live without trend data too

Walkthrough of using REST Web Services in Excel

Yes, Office 2003 is supported using the new Web Services as well. The steps in Office 2007 are similar (and slightly easier) so I'm showing the steps as though it was in Office 2003 below.

Importing XML data isn't as prominent a feature in Office 2003 but the features are similar to Office 2007.

First make sure you generate your request in the WebTrends Generator and use the "Excel" option rather than XML.

The Excel format is in plain unformatted HTML which Office is really happy to consume and put in an Excel table.

Second, once you have the full request address copy it and go to the following feature in Excel 2003 (see screen shot) or find the "Data > From Web" button in the Office 2007 ribbon. Paste the address in the bar that appears. Note that this feature in Office for some reason attempts to load whatever page you have as your browser homepage, which makes no sense since it throws errors being as how most peoples homepage isn't a data feed

Once you click "Go" after pasting the request into the window there will be a wait while Excel tries to access the data and then an authentication window pops up. Note that sometimes if you are working on other programs, sometimes you may not notice this window has popped up.

The critical aspect of making this window work is you need to format your username to have your WebTrends Account name first followed by a backslash \ and then your username. See screenshot below.

The final step is it will return the XML data to be viewable in the query window and you need to click the "Import" button to finalize your request. Excel will pop up a window asking where you want to put the data (cell A1?). There is a somewhat confusing moment at this point because Excel inserts a "Getting Data" message in text in the cell you selected but there is no modal (i.e. Excel allows you to click around other cells and do other functions) so it's hard to notice that anything is happening. Rest assured the data will show up shortly in the Excel spreadsheet.

Is enabling "interval data" in a custom report considered "destructive"?

I do not see the "Visits Trend" report in the Report list on the generator. We typically use the "Visit Trend" and the "Page View Trend" (this one is there) to look at Profile totals over time (that's in there). Was there a reason for not including this report? Is there somewhere else I should be getting the visits for a profile?

Express Hourly Interval Data

Will we be able to pull hourly interval data for current day (Express) data using the REST api for Page View based measures?

Our Editors would like to be able to see how various page components (modules), as well as for pages, sections and other reports, are performing on an hourly basis to ensure page real estate is being used effectively. For example, say a module has a solid number of clicks and a high CTR for the day overall, but there is a drop off in the clicks after a couple of hours, they would like to know when that drop-off happens, and then use that information to add/remove/modify content. Ideally, they are askign for real-time, but hourly data would be a big step in the right direction, and extremely useful.

Can we enable Interval data on built-in report measures?

One of the primary drawbacks my clients and I have noted is that we can't pull Trend data for built-in Webtrends reports, like Pages. Is it possible to enable interval data on the Views and Visits measures for these reports under-the-hood since we can't enable them via the UI?

While the immediate resolution would be to copy these reports this seems counterproductive. From an end-user stand-point it's that many more reports to manage and counts against their overall custom report usage for billing. From an Operations stand-point we are creating an increase analysis overhead, profile utilization and availability. It seems like a win-win if we can do this.

Does anyone know if there are plans to enable interval data for at least the Pages report in upcoming releases?

Web Services SDK Ideas

I just wanted to throw this out there for open discussion. What SDK features would everyone like for the web services? I'll start off with a general item.

Method to provide duplication of each web service REST query, based on a mimicked namespace path, etc.
- https://ws.webtrends.com/beta/reportservice/profiles/ would be something along the lines of Factory.GetProfiles(); which would then return a list of "Profile" objects. The same would be available for reports, periods, etc.

That's my item #1, please add the other items for SDK inclusion. Thx!

Issue Requesting Trend Data

This is a rather large report with some decent sized table limits (analysis 60K, reporting 40K. It is probably worth noting that this profile only has Daily and Monthly reporting periods enabled.

Am I doing soemthing wrong with my request or is this a larger issue?

Built-in reports not an option using generator.webtrends.com?

My apologies if this has been covered someplace but I wasn't able to find anything on this. I am not seeing any built-in tables showing in the reports drop-down menu. I've checked several accounts and seemingly I only get custom reports.

Further, are there a set of rules a report must meet in order to get trended data, I know there is but are the requirements posted someplace? Of all of the reports I've ever been able to select, the trending radial button never comes into focus.

I have been working on a proxy service that will acquire the profiles, reports, definitions, ect... and then persist them to a database. This allows me to make a connection to the REST adapter once and acquire the data I need, persist it locally and server it to multiple users without having to make return trips to the REST Service. I can then provide access to the stored data through RemoteObjects served from the same domain as my application which bypasses certain security considerations for Flash, Flex or LDCS Applications.

Works great but I need a way to programatically sync the data that does not add much in the way of overhead. I need a process to check every so often to see if there are updates to the profiles/reports details. Because I am persisting data I also need to provide a way to manually refresh. This is easy enough to do but I lack the function required to do it efficiently.

Currently I am forced to perform a full request for the entire object (profiles list, profile, report definition, ect...) every time. I am then forced to compare to locally stored data to verify if there was any difference. Not much of a problem if you are only dealing with a few profiles but scaled across multiple accounts and perhaps hundreds of profiles then the added processing and bandwidth overhead could become a problem.

What would help is a function call to identify if there were any changes to the accounts structure. I.E. new profiles, new reports, modifications to what reports are attached to what accounts. This would not need to extend to the analysis. Really it would just be for the structure of the accounts, profiles, reports.

Thinking out loud:

So for example I pull the initial list of profiles and persist it to local storage. On a schedule or through a refresh function I want to check for changes or updates to my profiles. Perhaps someone added or modified a profile since I had last acquired the data? Maybe there is a new report attached to a profile. Regardless of reason I want to update my locally stored model to reflect the current remote model.

The GUID of the new account and the GUID of the profile that was modified are added to an Array and stored on WebTrends side.

Later I need to identify if there are any changes I need to synchronize to. So for example I call: https://ws.webtrends.com/beta/ReportService.svc/profile/hasUpdates?format=xml

If there are no updates I can ignore that account and move on to the next. If there are updates then returning only the array of GUID's that I need to concern myself with allows me to loop through the GUIDs and format requests for just those profiles.

The same could be done for reports connected to profiles and at the report definition level. So if I were to call:

API syntax design

Two suggestions for minor changes in the API syntax. These will improve clarity and consistency with community conventions - two very important criteria in making APIs more usable and reducing errors.

To get a list of profiles: /profiles (plural) instead of the current /profile (singular)

To get a list of reports: /profiles/{profileId}/reports instead of the current /profile/{profileId}/report

These changes will also improve internal consistency, since we use the plural /periods for getting time periods.

"Empty" report returns no data and no error

When a request is made for a report that does not appear to have any data in it, there is no return of any kind. This will cause an error condition in Excel, but the same query entered in a browser returns nothing.

Suggest some data be returned indicating empty report.

FTP excel reports or use DX API

Hi,

m a new baby on the board without any background of Webtrend.

In my project, there is a requirement to build a Mgmt Dashboard on the data extracted(weekly) from Webtrend reports(around 20) for all the profiles. Also the report data need to be persisted at our end. After I spent 2-3 hours on Webstrend documentation, I can think about 2 options to pull the data from Webtrends -

Schedule batch processes at out end which pulls data from Webtrend using REST API, transform and dump it into application DB. Then show it to end user one web based interface.
Schedule the Webtrend batches to FTP the csv reports to our site, extract the data, transform it and dump it into our DB.

Any suggestions?

JSON Schema

I just wanted to get a thread started on the new JSON format (circa 3 weeks ago). I was just curious if this is the schema that we are sticking with, or if it will be changing again. We had built a really cool overlay Firefox add-in for our site to show the Impressions, Clicks and Clickthrough Rate for individual modules on our pages for the Current Day (understanding that Express data is not the yet, but will be at some point). While the old schema was not perfect, we were able to get what we needed, but we have not been able to get this working using the new schema.

It seems to me that the real issue is having the dimension value as the name of the Node. Here is how my guy explained it to me (the data shown is from a large 1D report where the first Dimension is the Module Identifiers and the measures are impressions, Clicks and Clickthrough Rate:

It's not quite like other programming languages, where I could wrap them in double-quotes, or brackets, or escape it. None of that works, from the tests I have tried.

Profile list not sorted by Alpha

We have a lot of profiles, and a logical sort in the drop-down would be much cleaner and easier to use. Also, might be nice to have a template drop-down too. You can always just select a Complete Template if you need to see them all, but might make it easier to find a specific report.

Malformed XML in KeyMetricsSummary report

Last week I was able to retrieve the KeyMetricsSummary report in Firefox from DX but for some reason Firefox is reporting it as malformed XML now.

I do not know if this is just affecting me. Maybe some others can check as well.

bounce rate by page report

I'm really excited about the REST api. It's enabled some amazing things already but here is a simple and valuable one to get others started: Bounce Rate Detail report.

Jayson Barley recently did a proof of concept to show combining two web services requests into a single report. We've created a proof of concept Webtrends Bounce Rate Detail report (online, not offline the Excel spreadsheet flavor) and I think others would find it of value.

OK so we may have gone overboard with the number of decimal places on the Bounce Rate column hehe . We left in the duplicate URL and Page Name columns to illustrate how the two tables are joined (or you might have thought it was smoke and mirrors).

Bounce Rate and Web Services

Webtrends has always been strong on the custom tables category... there must be hundreds dimensions of data you can combine/merge like showing campaign categories, by campaign channel, by creative and the engagement funnel fallout while displaying visitor latency (the time since the visitors' last visit), engagement rates, etc. Powerful.

What's silly though is that Webtrends has leaned on the "do it yourself" aspect in fairly standard areas. Take bounce rate (by page) for example. Fairly standard stuff.

But by doing this, it can occasionaly leave things out too.

Specifically, a "bounce rate" (operable word being "rate") report is expected to show how many times a page was only a single page visit (bounces) divided by the total number of times it was an entry page. The idea is that if most of the time, people land on the page and bail out of your site, the bounce rate is high. Makes sense.

But using Webtrends custom tables (custom reports) you can certainly create a report that shows the number of times an entry page was also a single access page (shows number of bounces) but you can't put them side by side and then derive a "rate" from the data. The custom table looks like: Dimension [Entry Page], Measure [visits], Filter [single page visits]. But by applying the filter of single page visits you obviously can't see the visit count for the entry pages that weren't single page visits... thus killing the "rate" part (the percentage).

Since you can join a dozen or more dimensions on URL the workaround has been, "export it to Excel".

Make it yourself

The Web Services REST api changes the game. As mentioned above, the bounce is a calculation of both the number of times a page is an entry page and the number of times it was a single page visit (bounced). Since both of these are standard report tables, you already have them in virtually all of your webtrends profiles.

All you need is a web services uri for each of these tables of data. If creating the uri using the api seems too much a task, there is even a nice online utility on the webtrends site that allows you to browse your profiles/reports/data and it will automatically show you the REST request for any piece of data you want. It also adds in the appropriate relative date period if you don't want to deal with date selection or anthing like that (example, you can have a "current_month" time period or "current_month-1" for last month or you could return a daily 30 day trend or whatever). Access the "Generator" as it's called here. You'll need your login to browse your profiles and reports and generate the REST uri's of course.

There are a lot of ways to do this, pick your html style that works best for you but all you need to do is join on URL and then use the two visits columns to create a calculated "Bounce Rate" column. Make sure to divide the Single Access Visits count by the Entry Page Visits count (rather than the other way around).

If you want to tackle this yourself on your own data, the simplest and easiest would be to change the format=xml in the URIs above to the format=html option which gives you two html tables you can merge.

Jayson Barley created an ASP page that allows date range changes, and also makes it flexible to swap out the two requests with any other report tables... which is a good topic for another post. Creating n-Dimensional webtrends report tables. Very cool concept. I'll keep you posted.

I am getting a "Generic Error" when I try to pull "Last 24 Hours"express data for a couple of my custom reports. It seems to work for some, but not others. It could be a size limitation, as the reports that don't work seem to be on the big side. I have tried to do this a few ways, but all seem to fail:

Test Account for All?

Return the data via the SDK in common data formats such as List, DataTable, or DataSet objects for ease of use and binding.
Add metadata for hierarchy of dimensions to identify where one is when stepping through the hierarchy.

Feature Request - Analysis Status Indication

Currently, one of the key things missing from both our existing ODBC/Web Services functionality as well as the new DX is the ability to determine profile analysis status prior to doing a data pull. Because of this, clients have little to no insight into whether the data they are pulling for a particular period is complete, partial, or express (when enabled). The only available workaround at this point would be to pull from profiles that do not have express data enabled and to check for the presence of the current period as an available bucket (which should indicate that the previous period is now complete) prior to execution.

Security Concern on Access to Reports

Currently in the report UI a user can be restricted to access to specific report data based on having access to a given report template or set of report templates. Customers today use report templates as a security method for controlling access to data. The current implementation of the REST apis do not appear to enforce this user access right.

Our ODBC and Web Service apis require that a template ID be provided when connecting to report data.

What is the plan to address this?

BUG: Not using all measures returns error

If I test a report and leave all the listed measures in their default checked state the API returns data for the selected profile/report.

However, if I uncheck some of the measures and only request one or two of them then testing the URL just returns:

Authentication issue

Our docs say to enter in account/username when prompted for authentication. This doesn't seem to work.

But account\username works fine.

Perhaps we should allow for both as I imagine folks will constantly make this mistake. At the very least, we should change our documentation.

The "list report time periods" REST call is confusing me or the documention needs to be updated.

I don't see how you specify the report based upon the example rest call in the documentaion:

/profile/{Profile ID}/periods returns the time periods for a given report

This call does return a bunch of periods, but I'm not sure what they represent as no report was specified.

Pulling Express Analysis versus Analytics Data for current day

I have noticed it seems we are pulling processed Analytics data rather than Express Analysis data for current_day queries. The methodology I used to determine this was to view the Page Views Trend table to get the latest hour with data and compare that against the "Last Hit Time" for GetProfileInfo in the MC. The profile has current Express Analysis available but the data being returned has much lower values that are more in-line with the values we would expect from the 3am Last Hit Time for processed Analytics data.

What is the logic behind this? Is it there a preference of sorts that when processed Analytics data is available for the current day we will use it over Express Analysis? Or does trending data have to be available?

We want to pull the Express Analysis data. Is there any flag or switch we have or can implement which would force using Express Analysis over Analytics data for the current day?
